Puppies have arrived!

Puppies arrived on 5/31/18!!  Four beautiful boys.  Two mantles, one harl and one mantle merle.  (No puppies are still available.)

Heidi is such a wonderful mom.  I was amazed and shocked the speed of labor and delivery.  She caught me a bit off guard.  Figured after the first signs of impending whelping, we’d have hours and hours before puppies arrived.  Nope, Heidi didn’t read the textbook.  I was scrambling to get the comfy dog bed out of the whelping box (so she learns to hang out in the box and be comfortable) hauled out and the newspapers put down before I was catching the first puppy!  She delivered all four puppies in three hours.  She adores her babies and takes her job as mommy very serious.

Pregnancy X-Ray

We had Heidi’s x-ray, to do a puppy count, today.

Saw just four puppies, although she really looked like she was carrying more!

Dog pregnancy x-ray
We count skulls – the four are labeled.

Still on the countdown

Outside for a short walk on this very hot day here in Iowa…

Pregnant Dane

Picture taken today, 5/27/18, and her due date is next Saturday, 6/2/18.

Ultrasound confirmed! Puppies expected!

Excited to report that the ultrasound done last week confirmed Heidi’s pregnancy!  Puppies due June 2nd!

Harl x mantle breeding

Because it’s a constantly moving image, an ultrasound does not give a puppy count (you wouldn’t know if you’re counting the same pup more than once), although we did see at least four puppies at once.  We will x-ray shortly before the due date to try to get a puppy count, which helps us during whelping to know how many to expect.
